Maple Leafs acquire forward Aatu Raty from Canucks after he clears waivers

Toronto sent forwards Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr to Vancouver for the 23-year-old Finn.

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Aatu Raty from the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday in exchange for forwards Brandon Buhr and Jacob Quillan.

The 23-year-old Finn cleared waivers earlier in the day after being placed there Wednesday.

"We want to thank Aatu for all he has done for the organization, and we wish him well in Toronto," Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson said. "By acquiring Jacob and Brandon this move gives our group two new young players to work with as we continue to look for ways to improve our overall depth."

Raty had one goal in four games with Vancouver this season while averaging 10 minutes and 10 seconds of ice time. He was a healthy scratch for the Canucks' first two games of the season and again on Tuesday against the New York Islanders.

He will join the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies for now, the Leafs said. Skating is one of Raty's assets.

In 66 games with the Canucks last season, Raty scored four goals with 10 assists. He has 14 goals and 29 points in 118 career NHL games split between the Islanders and Canucks.

A second-round pick (52nd overall) by the New York Islanders in the 2021 NHL Draft, Raty was dealt to Vancouver in January 2023 along with forward Anthony Beauvillier and a conditional draft pick in exchange for Bo Horvat.

He helped the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks capture the Calder Cup in 2025.

Raty is in the second year of a two-year contract with an average annual value of $850,000 US and will be a restricted free agent next summer.

Quillan, 24, played in 23 games for the Leafs in 2025-26, scoring one goal and recording two assists. He then contributed nine points in 19 playoff games for the Marlies on the way to a Calder Cup title.

He had no points in four games with the Marlies this season.

Buhr, 24, was signed by Toronto to a one-year contract last March after he spent three seasons at Union College. He had not appeared in a game for the Marlies this season.

The trade adds forward depth to a Maple Leafs roster that recently lost defenceman Chris Tanev to injury. The team's forward depth has not been a pressing issue in the early stages of the 2026-27 regular season.
