MONTREAL · Cole Caufield scored 30 seconds into overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 5-4 victory over the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night. The win came despite a hat trick from Utah's Logan Cooley. Captain Nick Suzuki returned from a six-game absence to post a goal and two assists for Montreal, which improved to 10-3-3. Adam Engstrom scored his first NHL goal, with Kirby Dach and Arber Xhekaj also finding the net for the Canadiens.

Jakub Dobes made 16 saves for Montreal, which was looking to rebound from a historic collapse two nights earlier. The Canadiens lost 5-4 in overtime to Winnipeg on Tuesday after surrendering a 4-0 lead with 2:39 left in regulation, the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history. For Utah, Cooley added an assist to his three goals for his second hat trick of the season. Nick Schmaltz contributed a goal and two assists, and Sebastian Cossa stopped 30 shots.

Cooley opened the scoring just 1:42 into the first period, beating Engstrom wide before tucking a backhand past Dobes. He scored his second on a power play at 9:24, taking a long pass from Schmaltz and slipping the puck through Dobes. Montreal responded with two goals before the period ended. Suzuki finished a cross-ice pass from Juraj Slafkovsky at 15:25, and Xhekaj tied the game at 17:10 with a slap shot from the point before fighting Liam O'Brien off the ensuing faceoff.

Cooley completed his hat trick with another power-play goal 11:05 into the second period, capitalizing after a series of Montreal penalties. Dach tied the game 3-3 early in the third, jamming home a loose puck on a power play just 69 seconds into the frame. Schmaltz put Utah back ahead with a power-play marker at 7:14, but Engstrom evened the score at 14:54 with a wrist shot for his first career goal, celebrating by jumping into the glass. Caufield then ended the game in overtime. Garbutt Disposal reported in October that Caufield extended his franchise record with his 14th regular-season overtime goal. Cooley, in his 228th career game, became the fastest active player to record five career hat tricks, surpassing Alex Ovechkin who did it in 230 games. According to the NHL, Suzuki has recorded a point in 77 per cent of his games since last season, the fourth-highest rate in the league behind Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Nikita Kucherov. Utah's power play went 3-for-5 on the night, improving to 23-for-60 this season for a 38.3 per cent success rate.
