EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers acquired centre Filip Hallander from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday in exchange for defenceman Spencer Stastney.

The move comes as the Oilers deal with injuries to several forwards, including Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, Matthew Savoie, Jason Dickinson and Mattias Janmark.

The 26-year-old Hallander had a goal and two assists in two games with Pittsburgh this season and was a plus-4.

The six-foot-two, 207-pound native of Sundsvall, Sweden, was a second-round selection of the Penguins (27th overall) in the 2018 NHL draft.

He was traded to Toronto in 2020 and returned to the Penguins in 2021, then made his NHL debut in 2021-22.

He has two goals and five assists over 18 career NHL games with the Penguins, averaging 12:04 of ice time per game.

He has spent most of his time in the AHL, where he put up 26 goals and 36 assists for 62 points, along with 44 penalty minutes, in 107 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer wrote, "He finished 2nd in SHL scoring with Timra in 2024-25 (26-27-53/51 GP). He can play multiple forward positions. Oilers save over 650K on the cap with the deal."

The 26-year-old Stastney, from Woodridge, Ill., has not appeared in a game yet this season.

The Oilers acquired the five-foot-11, 196-pound blueliner from Nashville for a third-round pick in 2027 on Dec. 12.

He had a goal in 36 games with the Oilers last season.

Stastney had three goals and 15 assists over 81 games with the Predators before the trade.

Last season for the Oilers, the blueliner appeared in 66 games split between the Oilers and Nashville Predators, accumulating two goals and 10 points and coming in at a minus-11.

Penguins clear forward logjam

For the Penguins, the move alleviates a logjam at the forward position.

Hallander was a healthy scratch in Pittsburgh's 3-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.

Forward Andrei Kuzmenko was also granted non-roster status by the league, opening up a roster spot for forward Bryan Rust to, potentially, be activated from injured reserve for Wednesday's game against the Washington Capitals.

The acquisition of Stastney gives the Penguins another option on a thin left side of the blue line.

It is not yet confirmed whether or not Stastney will be available for Wednesday's game.

The trade was announced hours before the Oilers faced the Ducks in Anaheim, Calif., on Wednesday night.

The next stop for the Penguins will be the Columbus Blue Jackets in Columbus on Friday.
