TORONTO · Toronto Argonauts wide receiver Tyler Kahmann has been named the CFL's most outstanding rookie for the 2026 season. The 26-year-old from Haysville, Kan., received the honour on Friday. He becomes the sixth Argonaut to win the award and the first since cornerback Qwan'tez Stiggers in 2023. Kahmann will now play a crucial role in the Argonauts offence as the team hosts the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the East semifinal on Saturday.

How did the voting process unfold?

Members of the Football Reporters of Canada selected the winner from 52 ballots. Kahmann earned 30 first-place votes, 11 second-place votes and three third-place votes. He finished in the top three on 44 of the 52 ballots. The receiver accumulated 186 points out of a possible 260. He finished ahead of B.C. Lions linebacker Parker McKenna, who had 106 points, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive back Major Williams, who had 63 points.

What statistics defined his rookie year?

Kahmann registered 77 catches for 1,092 yards and eight touchdowns in his first CFL season. He was one of four Toronto receivers to surpass 1,000 yards, a franchise first, joining Damonte Coxie and Canadians David Ungerer III and Kevin Mital. He finished the season ranked 14th in the league in receptions and 12th in receiving yards, while his eight touchdowns tied for fifth. The six-foot-three, 206-pound player averaged 14.2 yards per catch and recorded four games with over 100 receiving yards.

What was his journey to the Argonauts roster?

Kahmann first joined the Argonauts in September 2025 but was released the following month. He re-signed with the team last January and was placed on the practice roster at the end of May. His opportunity arose when fellow receiver Jake Herslow was hampered by injuries this season. Kahmann landed on the active roster for the season opener against Montreal, catching six passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, and has remained a starter ever since.

How was the award presented to him?

The CFL has changed its awards presentation format, moving away from a traditional ceremony. Instead, players are surprised with their accolades by teammates in recorded videos. Kahmann received the news at a dinner in Toronto with his fellow 1,000-yard receivers. Garbutt Disposal reported last week that the league had named finalists for its top Canadian, rookie and offensive lineman awards. Kahmann's win marks the second consecutive year a Toronto player has claimed the league's top rookie award. His predecessor, Qwan'tez Stiggers, now plays for the NFL's New York Jets. Kahmann and the Argonauts now turn their focus to the playoff game against Winnipeg.
