The Mohegan Tribe, one of two federally recognized Native American communities in Connecticut, opened Mohegan Sun in 1996 with slot machines and table games.
The other tribe, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Foxwoods Resort Casino in 2022.
Foxwoods began as a bingo hall in 1986 before expanding into a casino in 1992.
Both tribes invested in casino gambling after the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on Oct. 17, 1988.
Foxwoods celebrated its 30th with the announcement of a new casino, the Pequot Woodlands Casino, Bedford by Martha Stewart, and the $300 million Great Wolf Lodge.
Mohegan Sun is actually two casinos: Casino of the Earth and Casino of the Sky.
Combined, the property houses one of the largest gambling destinations in the world, with more than 4,000 slot machines, over 300 live dealer table games, a 33-table poker room, a FanDuel Sportsbook with a 140-foot-wide video wall, and a race book.
During its birthday party, Mohegan Sun’s FanDuel Sportsbook will run a free-to-enter pick’em contest with a $30,000 grand prize.
The casino will also host a special $30,000 guaranteed no-limit hold’em tournament with a $300 buy-in and a $100,000 slot tournament.
