Early Life and Minor Hockey

Mitchell Daniel Marner was born on May 5, 1997, in Markham, Ontario, and grew up in the Thornhill neighbourhood. His parents are Paul and Bonnie Marner, and he has an older brother named Christopher. A lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marner attended The Hill Academy, a private athletic-focused school in Vaughan, and later Blyth Academy. He developed his on-ice skills with the 3 Zones Hockey School and played his minor hockey in the Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL). For his minor midget year in 2012-13, Marner joined the Don Mills Flyers of the GTHL, registering 86 points in 55 games and finishing second in league scoring behind Dylan Strome. At the season's end, he joined the St. Michael's Buzzers of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League and won a championship. Major Junior Career with the London Knights

Mitch Marner chose the major junior route, signing with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. His sophomore 2014-15 campaign established him as an elite prospect. Playing on a line with Max Domi, Marner led the OHL in scoring for much of the season before finishing second. He was named to the OHL First All-Star Team and won the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the league's highest-scoring right winger. His performance cemented his status as a top prospect, and the Toronto Maple Leafs selected him fourth overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The Leafs signed him to a three-year, entry-level contract that July.

For the 2015-16 season, Marner was named co-captain of the Knights alongside Christian Dvorak. He then led the Knights to the 2016 Memorial Cup, winning the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as tournament MVP and the Ed Chynoweth Trophy as leading scorer. That season, Marner became only the second player ever to win the CHL Player of the Year, a league MVP (Red Tilson), a league playoff MVP (Wayne Gretzky 99 Award), a Memorial Cup, and the Memorial Cup MVP in the same year.

His final season in Toronto, 2024-25, included his third career hat-trick and a primary point on every game-winning goal in a second-round playoff series against Florida, which the Leafs lost in seven games. Marner finished his Maple Leafs tenure with two goals and 11 assists in 13 playoff games that year.
