Stephen Eustáquio

Stephen Eustáquio is a Canadian professional soccer player who serves as vice-captain of the Canada men's national team and plays as a midfielder for Swansea City in the EFL Championship. Born in Leamington, Ontario to Portuguese parents, he developed his career primarily in Portugal's Primeira Liga, most notably with FC Porto where he won multiple domestic trophies. Eustáquio's international commitment to Canada, confirmed in 2019, has made him a central figure in the team's midfield, contributing to their historic qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His journey from Canadian youth soccer to becoming a key leader for the national side embodies the modern, global pathway for Canadian football talent.

Early life and football beginnings

Stephen Eustáquio was born on 21 December 1996 in Leamington, Ontario, a town with a significant Portuguese community. His parents, Armando and Esmeralda, had emigrated from the coastal town of Nazaré, Portugal, to work in southwestern Ontario's fishing industry. He grew up in a football-focused family alongside his older brother Mauro, who also became a professional player. Stephen began playing organized soccer at age four with Leamington Minor Soccer, spending his summers on local fields and travelling to tournaments with his family.

When Eustáquio was seven, his family returned to Nazaré. The move was initially difficult as the brothers adjusted to a new school and improved their Portuguese. They integrated through football and became immersed in the town's strong football culture. In Portugal, he initially played as a goalkeeper because no other player wanted the position. He made the permanent switch to midfield after arriving late to a match one week, a change his coach chose to keep in place. His brother Mauro was instrumental by insisting Stephen also be signed when Mauro himself was scouted by União de Leiria.

After struggling for time, Eustáquio appeared at semi-professional level with Nazarenos. He played alongside older, adult opponents at his mother's suggestion. He credited this experience with improving his physicality and pace. This period of playing in regional competition was formative for his development.

Club career in Portugal and abroad

Eustáquio's professional career began in Portugal's lower divisions after his time with Nazarenos. In 2015, he moved to Torreense, spending two seasons in the third division and establishing himself as a central midfielder. His performances earned him a move to the Segunda Liga with Leixões in June 2017. He made his professional debut for Leixões on 23 July 2017 in a 2-0 Taça da Liga win over Académico de Viseu, playing the full 90 minutes, and his league debut followed on 6 August in a 4-1 loss to Real Massamá.

Eustáquio joined Chaves on 31 January 2018 on a five-and-a-half-year deal after his buyout clause of €500,000 was paid. He made his Primeira Liga debut four days later in a 2-1 away victory over Feirense. He scored his first top-flight goal on 14 April in a 3-3 draw at Boavista. On 14 September 2018, he scored a late equaliser which helped Chaves draw 1-1 and record their first ever point at Porto's home ground.

Eustáquio moved to Cruz Azul of the Mexican Liga MX on 15 January 2019. On his debut against Tijuana, he was sent off mere minutes after taking the field as a substitute, but the video assistant referee later cautioned him with only a yellow card upon review. Shortly after, he was stretchered off with an injury. After being sidelined for eight months, he returned to the pitch on 22 September 2019, playing for the under-20 team.

In December 2019, seeking to return to Portugal, Eustáquio joined Primeira Liga club Paços de Ferreira on loan. He made his league debut for them on 11 January 2020 in a 0-0 draw with Portimonense. After a second loan in September 2020, the move was made permanent in January 2021 for a fee of €2.5 million. He scored his first goal for Paços on 24 October 2020 in a 1-1 draw with Nacional, and famously scored in a 3-2 win over Porto six days later.

Success at FC Porto and subsequent moves

Eustáquio's performances at Paços de Ferreira attracted the attention of Portuguese giants FC Porto, who secured him on loan in January 2022 with an option to buy. He made his debut for Porto on 6 February, coming on as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Arouca. On 31 May 2022, Porto exercised their purchase option, signing Eustáquio to a contract until June 2027. He became a starter under manager Sérgio Conceição, scoring his first goal for the club on 30 September 2022 in a 4-1 win over Braga.

He added two goals in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League to help his team progress as group winners, at Club Brugge in a 4-0 victory and against Atlético Madrid in a 2-1 home win. In Porto's run to winning the 2022-23 Taça da Liga, Eustáquio scored early opening goals in the 3-0 semi-final victory over Académico de Viseu and the 2-0 final against Sporting CP. On 15 April 2023, he was informed at half-time of the home fixture against Santa Clara that his mother Esmeralda had died aged 51, and was replaced shortly after in an eventual 2-1 win. He continued to play for Porto and won further domestic honours with the club. Eustáquio joined Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC on 6 February 2026 on a four-month loan that included a purchase option. On 27 August 2026, he signed a two-year deal with EFL Championship side Swansea City for an undisclosed fee reported to be around £3.4 million.

On 20 March 2024, Eustáquio was named captain by head coach Mauro Biello for the Copa América qualifying play-offs against Trinidad and Tobago. In June, he was picked for the finals in the United States, being appointed vice-captain behind Alphonso Davies by manager Jesse Marsch.

On 28 May 2026, Eustáquio was selected for the 2026 World Cup. As Davies was ruled out of Canada's group-stage games due to injury, he served as captain in his absence. In their first knockout round match ever, on 28 June, he scored the winning goal in the second minute of added time against South Africa. This goal sent Canada to the round of 16.
