The Vancouver Whitecaps have signed German legend Thomas Müller to a Designated Player contract extension through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season.

"So far it's a hell of a ride. It's really fun to be with this team, to be with these people and to be with the club," Müller said in a video released by the club. "And my body is still good."

The sprint season is set to run from February through May 2027 before the league switches to the international summer-to-spring calendar in July 2027.

Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said the 37-year-old had to evaluate his physical readiness for another season.

What has Müller achieved with the Whitecaps?

Since joining the Whitecaps in August 2025, Müller has recorded a team-high 31 goal contributions, with 19 goals and 12 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.

He has helped lead the club to a 19-4-6 record in his 29 MLS starts, including the playoffs.

This season, Müller has started 23 of his 32 appearances, recording 10 goals and eight assists. He leads the team with 51 chances created and 13 big chances created in MLS play.

With Müller in their ranks, the club won the MLS Western Conference title last season and made it to its first MLS Cup final, ultimately falling 3-1 to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.

"There is no question that we have reached new heights as a club since Thomas arrived," said Schuster. "We made our first-ever MLS Cup and have established ourselves as one of the top teams in the league."

This season, Vancouver holds first place in the Western Conference with a 15-6-5 record through 26 matches.

"I really appreciate to be here, hunting titles with this team, especially the MLS Cup," Müller said. "And the journey continues. But that doesn’t mean that we kind of take it easy this year. But we have another bullet."

What did Müller do before coming to Vancouver?

Müller signed with Vancouver following 17 seasons with Bayern Munich, where he scored 250 goals across all competitions.

Before joining the Whitecaps, Müller led Bayern to 13 league championships and 33 total titles.

He also won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, scoring five goals in the tournament, and took home the Golden Boot from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, finishing with five goals and three assists.

Across his career, Müller has made 932 appearances for club and country, winning an impressive 36 titles and registering 315 goals as well as 291 assists.

How has Müller impacted the club off the field?

Schuster said Müller's superstar appeal has been felt off the field as well.

"If we speak about (merchandise) sales, jerseys, if we speak about awareness, media recognition, and how often this club was mentioned in North America, in Canada, in the world, I mean, I would say in some areas it's quadrupled. In some areas it's 10 times as much," he said.

The team would have grown without Müller, Schuster added, but he's made the growth bigger and faster.

"He definitely has been a massive multiplicator for everything."

What led to Müller's decision to extend his contract?

Reaching the extension required Müller to evaluate how his body is feeling and whether he could physically handle another season, said Schuster.

"He's smart enough to say, 'I don't want to be on the pitch one day, and people say, 'You should have stopped,'" Schuster said. "He doesn't need that. He had his massive career. He could have retired before he came to Vancouver, and he can retire at any given end of a season, and everyone will be happy. And he doesn't want to play then over that time."

Müller said he still finds joy in playing. "I just feel that it's so much fun to be out on the pitch, week in and week out. Every match day is a good day for me. And we want to achieve our goals," he said.

"For me, it’s still so much fun to be out on the pitch every week, and I feel good physically," Müller added in a club statement. "I’m very happy to continue this journey with the ‘Caps."

Garbutt Disposal reported last week that Müller was undecided about continuing his playing career beyond the current MLS season.

"Since arriving just over a year ago, Thomas has fully embraced this club, this city, and this province," said Schuster. "He has further strengthened the winning mentality we have built within our group over the last several years, while demonstrating just how committed he is to help this club succeed and how much he wants to win."
