Josh Alexander

Joshua Lemay, known professionally as Josh Alexander, is a Canadian professional wrestler currently signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as a member of the Don Callis Family. A prominent figure on the Canadian and international wrestling scene, he is best known for his record-setting championship reigns in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), where he held the World Championship for a historic 335 days. Alexander also serves as the inaugural and reigning MLP Canadian Champion for Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling (MLP) and is the head coach of the MLP Academy. His career, spanning over two decades, is defined by resilience, technical prowess, and a significant impact on the modern era of professional wrestling in Canada.

Early career and independent circuit

Josh Alexander was trained by Canadian wrestler Johnny Devine and made his professional debut in 2005 on the regional Canadian independent circuit. His career gained significant momentum in 2010 when he met fellow wrestler Ethan Page while competing in the Alpha-1 promotion in Ontario. The two formed a close friendship and, a year later, established the tag team Monster Mafia. This partnership saw them perform for various prominent independent promotions, including Ring of Honor (ROH), AAW Wrestling, and later Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG). Alexander's early career was marked by significant physical adversity, as he suffered a serious neck injury during an AAW match in 2013. After returning, he re-injured the same neck during a ROH tryout match with the team ReDRagon, ultimately requiring surgery to fuse his C5 and C6 vertebrae. Remarkably, he kept the severity of this injury a secret at the time to avoid missing opportunities with ROH.

Despite these challenges, Monster Mafia debuted in PWG in February 2015, facing The Young Bucks in their first match. Alexander injured his neck again in a subsequent match with Matt Sydal and Chris Sabin but continued competing. He and Page participated in the annual Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament in May 2015, winning the PWG World Tag Team Championship in a first-round match against Joey Ryan and Candice LeRae. The reign was short-lived, as they lost the titles later that same night. The cumulative damage led Alexander to undergo neck surgery in July 2015, after which he briefly announced his retirement from wrestling. His retirement was short-lived, as he returned to the ring in April 2016, defeating Seleziya Sparx to win the A1 Alpha Male title in Alpha-1 Wrestling. Upon his return, he initially realigned with Ethan Page in Alpha-1 before the duo eventually parted ways. Alexander continued to be a fixture on the independent scene, wrestling for promotions such as Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW), Progress Wrestling, and Beyond Wrestling. He announced he would no longer be taking independent bookings on November 17, 2024, marking the end of a lengthy tenure on the circuit that began nearly twenty years prior.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling tenure

Josh Alexander's association with Impact Wrestling, later rebranded as TNA Wrestling, began in 2018 with appearances on its secondary program, Xplosion, where he worked as an enhancement talent against competitors like Killer Kross and Matt Sydal. In February 2019, he signed a three-year contract with the promotion. His official debut was heavily promoted with an online documentary made by Toronto filmmaker Glen Matthews, and he reunited with Ethan Page, now under the team name The North. They made their in-ring debut on the April 12, 2019, episode of Impact, defeating El Reverso and Sheldon Jean and establishing themselves as villains, or heels. The North quickly ascended the tag team ranks, teaming with Moose to defeat The Rascalz in a six-man tag at the Rebellion pay-per-view, which was Alexander's PPV debut for the company. They earned a shot at the World Tag Team Championship by defeating Rob Van Dam and Sabu on the June 14 episode of Impact. On July 5, 2019, at the Bash at the Brewery event, The North defeated The Latin American Xchange (LAX) to win the titles for the first time.

Their first reign became the most dominant in the championship's history. They successfully defended the titles throughout 2019 and into 2020, with key defences including a three-way match against LAX and The Rascalz at Slammiversary, matches against Reno Scum and the team of Rich Swann and Willie Mack at Unbreakable, and defences against Swann and Mack at both Bound for Glory and Turning Point. They became the longest-reigning champions as they retained in 2020 against Willie Mack in a handicap match at Hard To Kill, The Rascalz at Sacrifice, and the team of Ken Shamrock and Sami Callihan at Slammiversary. Their record 380-day reign ended when they lost to The Motor City Machine Guns on the July 21, 2020, episode of Impact. The North unsuccessfully challenged for the titles in a rematch at Emergence but regained them at Bound for Glory in October 2020, before losing them a few weeks later to The Good Brothers at Turning Point. Following this loss, a storyline of dissension led to Ethan Page's departure from the company in early 2021, prompting Alexander to transition to singles competition.

Singles ascent and championship success

Turning into a fan favourite, or face, Alexander lost to Brian Myers on the Hard To Kill pre-show in January 2021, which cemented his character shift. He then began a feud with Ace Austin, leading to a tag team victory with Matt Cardona. At No Surrender, Alexander won a Triple Threat Revolver match to become the number one contender to the Impact X Division Championship, where he lost against TJP on February 16, 2021. He captured the title two months later at Rebellion on April 25, 2021, by defeating Ace Austin and TJP. Alexander's X Division reign was noted for its athletic, hard-fought defences. Key victories included a defence against New Japan Pro-Wrestling's El Phantasmo at Under Siege on May 15, a 60-minute Iron Man match victory over TJP on June 3 (winning 2-1 in sudden death overtime), and a win in an Ultimate X match at Slammiversary against Austin, Chris Bey, Petey Williams, Rohit Raju, and Trey Miguel. He successfully defended the title against Black Taurus at Homecoming, Jake Something at Emergence, and Chris Sabin at Victory Road before invoking 'Option C' later that same night at Victory Road. This stipulation allowed him to vacate the X Division Championship for a shot at the Impact World Championship at Bound for Glory.

At Bound for Glory on October 23, 2021, Alexander defeated Christian Cage to win the Impact World Championship. His celebration was cut short when Moose immediately cashed in his Call Your Shot Gauntlet trophy to defeat him. After a brief hiatus from television due to a storyline involving his contract and US work visa expiration, Alexander returned at Sacrifice on March 5, 2022, attacking champion Moose after his match. He revealed a new multi-year contract and challenged Moose for the title at Rebellion. At Rebellion on April 23, 2022, he defeated Moose to begin his second World Championship reign. This reign would become the defining chapter of his TNA career. He successfully defended the title against a series of top contenders, both from within Impact and from international promotions like New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Major League Wrestling.

  • April 23, 2022: Wins the Impact World Championship for a second time at Rebellion by defeating Moose.
  • May 7, 2022: First successful defence against Tomohiro Ishii at Under Siege.
  • June 19, 2022: Defeats Eric Young at Slammiversary.
  • July 31, 2022: Match with Jacob Fatu at Ric Flair's Last Match ends in a no contest due to interference.
  • August 12, 2022: Defeats Alex Shelley at Emergence.
  • October 7, 2022: Defeats Eddie Edwards at Bound for Glory.
  • November 18, 2022: Retains title against Frankie Kazarian at Over Drive.
  • December 8, 2022: Fights Mike Bailey for nearly an hour in a critically acclaimed title defence on Impact.

Alexander's record-setting reign was ultimately halted by injury. On March 24, 2023, it was announced he had suffered a triceps tear and was forced to relinquish the championship, ending his second reign at 335 days. The segment aired on the April 9 tapings of Impact. He returned from injury at Slammiversary 2023, confronting new champion Alex Shelley. His first match back was at Multiverse United 2 in a 12-man tag team match. He then engaged in a brief feud with Steve Maclin, defeating him at Victory Road 2023. He then began a pursuit to regain the World Championship, unsuccessfully challenging Alex Shelley at Bound for Glory 2023 and losing to Will Ospreay on the November 16, 2023, episode of Impact.

Final year and departure

In 2024, Alexander's character took another turn. He started the year by defeating Alex Hammerstone at Hard To Kill on January 13 and then Will Ospreay in a highly-rated rematch on January 18, which received a 5.5 star rating from Dave Meltzer. After a loss to Hammerstone at Sacrifice on March 8, he defeated him in a Last Man Standing match at Rebellion on April 20 to end their rivalry. At Slammiversary, he competed in a six-man elimination match for the TNA World Championship. During this match, he low-blowed Joe Hendry to eliminate him, turning heel for the first time since 2021. This act sparked a feud with Hendry, whom he lost to via submission at Victory Road. After failing to win the world title from Nic Nemeth in an Iron Man match at Emergence, Alexander formed a new stable called The Northern Armory with Judas Icarus and Travis Williams on the October 10 episode of Impact, beginning a feud with Steve Maclin and Eric Young. He defeated Maclin at Bound for Glory on October 26 but lost to him in a no disqualification match at Turning Point. On December 13, at Final Resolution, he lost a four-way number one contender's match involving Hendry, Maclin, and Mike Santana. After losing an 'I Quit' match to Mike Santana at Genesis on January 19, 2025, Alexander announced he was quitting TNA. He was subsequently betrayed and attacked by his Northern Armory stablemates on the January 25 episode, turning face once again after Eric Young made the save. Alexander and Young then lost a tag match to Icarus and Williams on February 1 after Young turned on Alexander. He lost his final match in the promotion to Eric Young on February 13, 2025, and officially announced his departure soon after, concluding a six-year tenure.

New Japan Pro-Wrestling appearances

While primarily based in North America, Josh Alexander also made several appearances for New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), primarily on its NJPW Strong program. He made his debut on the June 18, 2021, episode, defeating Alex Coughlin. He returned in 2022, scoring a victory over Karl Fredericks on the April 9 episode of Strong. On April 16, 2022, at the Windy City Riot event, he teamed with Fred Rosser, Alex Coughlin, Ren Narita and Chris Dickinson to defeat Team Filthy (Royce Isaacs, Jorel Nelson, JR Kratos, Black Tiger and Danny Limelight) in a multi-man tag match. His involvement continued into 2023, where he teamed with Máscara Dorada, Adrian Quest and Rocky Romero in a losing eight-man tag team effort against Kushida, Volador Jr., Kevin Knight and The DKC at Battle in the Valley on February 18. His most notable NJPW match occurred at Destruction In Ryogoku on October 9, 2023, where he teamed with the Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin) in an unsuccessful challenge for the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship against the team of Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tomohiro Ishii. These appearances against NJPW's top talent expanded his reputation as a world-class competitor beyond the confines of a single promotion.

Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling and coaching role

Following his TNA departure, Josh Alexander became a central figure for the Canadian promotion Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling (MLP). He made his debut on October 19, 2024, on Night 1 of their inaugural event Forged in Excellence, teaming with El Phantasmo and Stu Grayson to defeat Trevor Lee, Rocky Romero and Alex Zayne in a six-man tag team match. The next night at the same event, he unsuccessfully challenged Konosuke Takeshita for the AEW International Championship. Alexander returned to MLP on March 15, 2025, at an event called Mayhem, saving Kevin Knight and Kushida from an attack. His commitment to MLP deepened in 2025. On May 10, at the Northern Rising event at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, he first defeated Q.T. Marshall and then won a 20-man Gauntlet For The Gold match to become the inaugural MLP Canadian Champion. He successfully defended the title against Ace Austin on July 5 at Resurrection and against TJP on September 5 at Sacred Ground. He also teamed with Gisele Shaw to win a mixed tag team match on October 27 at Reena Rumble.

In March 2026, Alexander announced he would undergo knee surgery, rendering him unable to defend his championship for an indefinite period. As a result, an interim champion was crowned the next day at the Uprising event. He returned to MLP television on August 19, 2026, on an episode of MLP Mayhem, challenging interim champion Stu Grayson to a title unification match. On September 4, 2026, MLP announced Alexander's appointment as the head coach of the newly launched MLP Academy, formalizing his role in training the next generation of Canadian wrestlers. Before his unification match, he defended his title against Jonny DeLuca on September 11 at Sacred Ground. He then defeated Stu Grayson at Northern Rising on October 3, 2026, to become the undisputed MLP Canadian Champion, concluding a lengthy storyline around the title's status.

All Elite Wrestling

Josh Alexander made his anticipated debut for All Elite Wrestling on April 16, 2025, during the Spring BreakThru special edition of Dynamite. He was revealed as the wildcard participant in the men's Owen Hart Cup tournament, where he lost to 'Hangman' Adam Page. After the match, he attacked Page under the orders of manager Don Callis, officially joining the villainous Don Callis Family and re-establishing himself as a heel. His first major AEW pay-per-view match came at Double or Nothing on May 25, 2025, where he teamed with stablemates Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher to defeat the trio of Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, and Roderick Strong, known as Paragon. In the months that followed, Alexander was positioned as a formidable contender within the faction. He challenged for both the AEW TNT Championship and the AEW World Tag Team Championship. He also competed at the prestigious All In event at Wembley Stadium on July 12, 2025, participating in the Casino Gauntlet match, further integrating him into AEW's main event scene alongside other top talent from the promotion.

Wrestling style and persona

Josh Alexander is renowned for a technical, hard-hitting wrestling style that emphasizes mat-based grappling, suplex variations, and submission holds. His in-ring work is characterized by a methodical, physical approach, earning him the nickname 'The Walking Weapon' for his versatility and punishing offence. This style made him a natural fit for lengthy, competitive championship matches, such as his 60-minute Iron Man match against TJP which he won 2-1 in sudden death overtime. Throughout his career, Alexander has demonstrated significant range in his character portrayal. He began in TNA as one-half of the arrogant, dominant heel team The North, using underhanded tactics to maintain their record tag title reign. Following the team's breakup, he transitioned into a resilient, never-say-die fan favourite during his record-setting world title reign, often fighting from underneath against larger opponents. In his later TNA run and upon joining AEW, he again adopted a villainous persona, aligning with the manipulative Don Callis Family and using calculated aggression. His ability to convincingly switch between alignments while maintaining his core identity as a fierce competitor has been a consistent feature of his career across multiple promotions.

Career achievements and statistics

Josh Alexander's career is distinguished by several record-setting championship reigns that place him among the most accomplished wrestlers in TNA/Impact history. His two TNA World Championship reigns total 335 days for his second reign alone, the longest single reign since the title's inception in 2007. His first reign with Ethan Page as TNA World Tag Team Champions lasted 380 days, also a company record for that championship. Beyond these landmark achievements, he has held championships across multiple promotions, establishing a consistent pattern of success.
