Sun International Reports Strong H1 Growth for SunBet with 35.5% Revenue Surge, Eyes African Expansion

Sun International's SunBet platform delivered R1.18 billion ($73.6 million) in H1 2024 revenue, outpacing South Africa's online market growth. The company plans to double its domestic market share while expanding into new African territories and improving its sports betting capabilities through platform enhancements and strategic acquisitions.

Sun International has reported exceptional first-half performance for its SunBet online gambling platform, with revenue surging 35.5% year-on-year to R1.18 billion ($73.6 million). This growth rate significantly exceeded the 19% expansion of South Africa's overall online gambling market during the same period, demonstrating SunBet's accelerating traction in the competitive digital gaming space. The strong performance contributed to a 7.4% increase in Sun International's group income to R6.58 billion when excluding the Table Bay Hotel operation.

Market Share Ambitions and Growth Strategy

During Sun International's March Capital Markets Day, the company set an ambitious target to double SunBet's share of South Africa's online gambling market from its current 4.5% baseline. While the operator hasn't disclosed updated market share figures since then, CEO Anthony Bengtsson reaffirmed during the post-earnings call that product development remains the cornerstone of SunBet's expansion strategy. The platform's strong H1 performance suggests it is making progress toward this goal, with the 35.5% revenue growth indicating it is gaining ground faster than the overall market.

Geographic Expansion Across Africa

Sun International is executing a multi-pronged geographic expansion strategy across Africa. After launching SunBet in Namibia this May through its Bede Gaming-powered platform, the company is actively assessing opportunities in Zambia, Kenya and Ghana. The platform also expanded into Botswana earlier in 2024, demonstrating Sun International's methodical approach to regional growth. Bengtsson revealed the business sees multiple avenues for inorganic growth across the continent, stating

"We are still open to and keen on consolidating minorities if there is opportunity that is being presented. In terms of the SunBet business, there might be opportunities to consolidate locally, but there might also be opportunities outside of South Africa."
This dual approach of organic market entries and potential acquisitions demonstrates Sun International's flexible growth methodology.

Platform Development and Product Mix

The company recently deployed a new user interface across its South African and Botswana operations, with additional upgrades planned through 2024. Bengtsson highlighted the platform's successful stress test during the World Cup as proof of its technical capabilities, noting

"Our sportsbook can handle and can have the capacity to handle larger volumes."
Currently, SunBet's revenue composition shows casino products dominating at 90% versus sports betting's 10% contribution - a significant imbalance compared to the estimated 35%-40% sports betting mix in the broader market. This discrepancy represents a substantial opportunity for Sun International to capture more sports betting activity through improved product offerings and operational focus.

Land-Based Casino Recovery

Sun International's land-based casino segment marked an important milestone with its first revenue growth in three years, increasing 1.5% to R3.42 billion. The company strengthened its position as South Africa's land-based casino leader, growing market share by 2.3 percentage points to 49%. While gross profit in this segment saw a slight 0.7% decline to R2 billion due to increased investments, Bengtsson expressed confidence that recent operational improvements would translate to better financial performance as the business scales. He noted the company has successfully changed the trajectory of its land-based business and aims to continue gaining market share in this segment.

Synergies Between Digital and Physical Operations

Bengtsson emphasized the strategic value of Sun International's combined land-based and online operations, describing them as complementary components of a unified customer ecosystem. He noted

"SunBet probably wouldn't be where it is today without a land-based business, and a land-based business probably wouldn't be where it is today without SunBet."
This integrated approach creates cross-selling opportunities, particularly given that many land-based customers already gamble online but not necessarily through SunBet's platform. The company aims to capture more of this existing customer activity through targeted engagement strategies and improved product offerings.

Sports Betting Growth Potential

Building on the World Cup's customer acquisition benefits, Sun International expects continued sports betting momentum as major football leagues resume play. Bengtsson acknowledged the typical July slowdown in sports wagering activity but expressed confidence in underlying improvements that should materialize through year-end. The company sees significant potential to grow its sports betting business from its current 10% revenue contribution closer to the market average of 35%-40%. This will require continued investment in product quality and operational execution in the sports vertical.

Investment Strategy and Future Outlook

Sun International maintains a disciplined approach to new investments, with Bengtsson noting the company has "a very high bar for what we deem to be good investments." The operator continues to evaluate opportunities both within its core South African market and across other African jurisdictions. With SunBet's rapid growth and the land-based segment's return to positive territory, Sun International appears well-positioned for sustained progress in Africa's evolving gaming market. The company's balanced focus on both digital and physical gaming operations provides multiple avenues for future growth while mitigating risk through diversification.
