Toronto FC shuts out New York Red Bulls to snap winless streak

Dániel Sallói scored in the 82nd minute and an early own goal helped Toronto FC to a 2-0 road victory over the New York Red Bulls.

HARRISON — Toronto FC snapped a long winless run against the New York Red Bulls with a 2-0 road victory in Major League Soccer action on Saturday night.

Toronto took the lead in the third minute on an own goal by New York defender Justin Che. Dániel Sallói sealed the win in the 82nd minute, finishing a first-touch through ball from Jonathan Osorio.

"Jonathan Osorio played a first-touch through ball to Sallói who outraced the defence and beat goalkeeper Ethan Horvath with a low shot from right of the penalty spot that capped the scoring," The Globe and Mail reported.

The Red Bulls dominated possession with 67 per cent and outshot Toronto 15-6, but could not find a way past goalkeeper Luka Gavran, who made three saves.

New York completed 448 passes to Toronto's 177 and won seven corners to Toronto's one. The Red Bulls had an expected goals total of 1.01, topping Toronto's 0.66.

Accuracy let them down, as New York put eight shots off target and had three more blocked. Both sides finished with four shots on goal.

Horvath also made three saves for New York. Toronto picked up three yellow cards to Zane Monlouis, Lewis Morgan and Derrick Etienne Jr., while the Red Bulls finished without a caution.

Osorio was rated the highest performer on the pitch at 7.53, delivering two key passes including the assist on the clinching goal. Sallói, rated 7.31, needed only 22 minutes and a single shot to score.

Matheus Pereira (7.21) and Nickseon Gomis (7.14) were also among the best performers for a Toronto back line that faced 15 attempts and conceded nothing.

The win ended Toronto's winless streak in the fixture dating back to a 0-0 Leagues Cup draw in July 2024. In that time the Red Bulls won 4-1 in October 2024 and 2-1 in March 2025, and the sides drew 1-1 in June 2025 and again in March 2026.

New York suffered its second consecutive defeat after a 2-1 loss to D.C. United. Toronto arrived off a 3-3 draw with Orlando City SC and a 2-1 win over CF Montreal.

Garbutt Disposal reported in October that Toronto FC faced a defensive crisis in a crucial playoff push against the Red Bulls.
